The Minerva mine is an open-cut mine located approximately 45km south of Emerald in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.
Minerva Mine uses the open cut “terrace” mining method to extract its coal. After careful top soil removal, the overburden rock is sequentially drilled, blasted and then removed using hydraulic excavators and trucks to expose the 6 main coal seams. The coal is then mined, crushed to 50mm top-size and stockpiled according to its quality parameters before being trucked 4 kilometres across the mine lease to the train load out where it is stockpiled to ensure continuous train loading capability. Automatic sampling equipment at the mine crusher and train load out ensure quality control at all stages of the coal production process.
Sojitz Blue produces Premium Hard Coking and Thermal Coals from its three Central Queensland Mines; Minerva, Meteor Downs South (MDS) and Gregory. 100% of Sojitz Blues’ coal sales are exported to customers in a number of destinations including Japan, South Korea, India, China, Europe and South East Asia.
After railing the coal 413kms via the Blackwater rail system, Sojitz Blue exports its coal through the RG Tanna coal terminal in Gladstone. This coal port has continued to maintain its reputation as a world-class multi-user terminal with excellent coal blending capabilities exporting a wide range of Southern Bowen Basin metallurgical and thermal coals to the world.
